Mobile sites are dead. Well, no, not really, but having a separate sites for your desktop and mobile users is. Or at least, it should be. What I am trying to say is that there is something out there that is bigger, better, stronger, faster, and that thing is Responsive Design. If you’ve heard of it, you are already on the right track. With responsive design, you don’t have to have worry about having different websites for various devices or making sure that your site runs properly on a mobile device because a responsive web site solves that problem for you – the same code work across multiple screen resolutions. And with more devices coming in varying screen resolutions, definitions and orientations, it is becoming of utmost importance that each one of those is accounted for.

But there are some other really important reasons why you should make the switch to responsive design for your website. Do you like stats? Well, here are a stats from Smart Insights:

More than 20 percent of Google searches are now being performed on some sort of mobile device.

25% of Internet users only access the Internet via a mobile device in the United States.

25.85% of all emails are opened on mobile phones, with another 10.16 percent being opened on tablets.

For the first time in history, mobile Internet usage surpassed desktop usage (according to ComScore)

Out of the 4 billion mobile phones in the world, 1.08 billion are smartphones and 3.05 (billion?) are SMS enabled.

48% of people start on search engines to do their mobile research and 93% of them go on to make a purchase (according to Mobile Path to Purchase: File Key Findings)

Need one more undeniable fact? Well, Google likes responsive. In fact, it loves it! It’s more efficient for Google to crawl one site since all the different sizes are really just one site with one URL using the same HTML across all devices. If a business has both a mobile site and desktop site, there are technically two different URL and different HTML for each and this forces Google to crawl and index multiple versions of the same exact site and no one likes duplicating their efforts!

Besides the Google benefit, it also makes users happy. If a website is not working properly on mobile or tablet device, users just aren’t going to stick around and that equals lost business. In this game, you have to stay ahead of the competition, so if more and more users are using their mobile devices to search and make purchases online, it’s only logical that you have a device-friendly site.
