It’s that time again! Caylin, our Graphic Designer Extraordinaire (™), is helping us welcome this three-day weekend with a solid playlist that’s sure to put you in a good mood! Caylin has grown with Ocreative for over 2.5 years and has a clever knack for web design and an uncanny ability to create icons for literally any subject matter (a little-known art!) Outside the office, Caylin is equally as creative – connecting with nature through photography, learning new crafts, experimenting in the kitchen, and taming her lioness of a cat, Luna!

Along with sharing her (eclectic) taste in music, Caylin also sat down and answered a few questions about herself. Because we work so closely with our clients, it’s important you have an opportunity to get to know us and this is a fun way to help make that happen! If you like what you’re hearing and you want to know more, be sure to check out Ocreative Mixtapes Vol 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff and kick off Labor Day weekend the right way!

Why did you choose a career in marketing & advertising?

The fields of marketing and advertising offer such a variety of projects and clients, so it always keeps me on my toes. As a graphic designer, I really enjoy working with such a diverse client base since it allows me to exercise my design skills because each industry is so different from each other in terms of what design styles work best.

The learning that comes with working with such a diverse group of clients is also a bonus. I feel that working in marketing and advertising has really opened my eyes to industries that I would have otherwise known nothing about, and it’s fascinating to see how they operate and what they do.

What drew you to Ocreative?

Since my first interview, I knew that Ocreative would be a great fit for me. The fun energy and the endless opportunities to grow and learn were what really drew me in, in the first place. Since I started, I have learned so many new things that I wasn’t expecting to from the others on the team (things like the basics of building a website in WordPress, what exactly SEO and PPC are, all the great places to eat in Lake Country, and what movies I still haven’t seen that I really should have by now). The ability to work on multiple projects for varying clients also interested me because it meant that no day would be the same, and that I would be able to try my hand at lots of different projects.

Oh, and being able to hang out with Wendy the office pup every day was an extra perk!

What is a little-known fact about you?

Something that people might not know about me is that I am a huge art history fan! I love learning about the stories behind famous artwork and why the artists made the choices that they did—it really provides context and a deeper appreciation for the work and what the artist accomplished. The art history classes that I took in school to get my Art History minor were some of my favorite classes because they were an opportunity to expose myself to new art styles that I might not have come across on my own. Plus, it makes visiting art museums a lot more fun!

When do you find yourself listening to music the most and why?

I find myself listening to music the most when I’m driving or when I’m working on any kind of task, whether it’s a project for work or something as mundane as cleaning. I love having jam sessions when I’m driving to work in the morning—it’s a great way to start the day, and there’s something to be said about being able to roll the windows down and crank up the volume up for a good tune. Having music playing while I’m working on something is also an instant mood-booster, especially when I come across a good song. When I really need to zone in on something, however, I tend to listen to instrumental soundtracks from my favorite movies and TV shows.

What influences your musical taste?

My musical taste is pretty all over the place, ranging from classic rock to pop to indie. Movies, TV shows, and the people that I surround myself with are my main musical influences. My friends and I have always traded new music suggestions with each other, and my family has always been a part of my musical upbringing. I grew up surrounded by a variety of genres, but classic rock was the one that stuck the most. I have memories of my dad playing Queen’s Greatest Hits in the car and my mom introducing me to her favorite classic rock artists (fun fact: my mom is the one who taught me that the only way to listen to AC/DC is with the volume cranked up, which is a rule that I still follow to this day).

What inspired you to create and share this playlist?

I love creating playlists. My personal Spotify has so many playlists on it because my music preferences change with my mood and because I am always looking for new music. Creating this playlist was a great opportunity to dig through my collection and challenged me to unearth some of my favorites to share. I love the feeling of finding a new song or artist that I really enjoy listening to, and hopefully that’s a feeling I can share!

What is your favorite song on the playlist and why?

I wouldn’t say that I have an absolute favorite song on this playlist, but I have always been a fan of Young the Giant and Simplify is one of my current favorites of theirs. The instrumentals behind it are fun and bold, and it is a great example of the range in music that the band creates. Plus, between the instruments and the vocals, it’s a great jam overall!
